| We are wondering often:
what I must do to create my own webpage? What do I need
to know?, What do I need to have?, Would be expensive?,
Why do I need a website?
Well, the following is a brief list of
everything you need just to start,
but remember, the most important thing that
you will need is patience and desire to keep on going.
You need: (each
link will take you to an explanation of each thing and
how you can get it:
- (Browser) - Once you have
an Internet connection, you will need a browser to
see you pages. Probably you are thinking "duh"...
but what I really want to tell you about browsers is
that there are a lot of them which we can use to
browse, that are not necessarily Internet Explorer
which comes as a default browser when we purchase
our computers (PC's). In fact, I recommend you
when creating pages, to have some of them installed
on your machine, obviously, if you have capacity on
your hard disk; in that way you can compare the way
you see your pages, cause I assure you, there are
differences between them. My favorite is
Moxilla
"Firefox". In my
personal opinion, is faster and more secure, and
I like very much the way to browse with it, because
of the tabs it has to open new windows in the same
space; and even Internet
Explorer version 7, has included those tabs as a
new feature, I found some things I don't like on
this new version, for instance, it is incapable to
show pages that are protected by certain programs
that encrypt their sources to avoid the stealing of
them and their graphics, showing an error message
when somebody enter on them. The other browsers like Netscape,
Opera or Firefox, keep these pages protected but
show them as it is supposed to be. On the other
hand, once you installed it, if you uninstall it you
will probably have a lot of troubles with dll's
missing; in my case, I had to format my
computer back to its factory mode, just for that. I
like Explorer 6 more than 7, but as I told you
before, my favorite is Firefox and it has a lot of
add-ons that makes your browsing time more efficient
and amused.
- Hosting
-It is the place where pages are hosted so the
people who have access to Internet can see them. If
you click the link you will see a little bit more of
information related to this theme.
- Domain- They are the
famous
.com, .net, .org, .gov, .pr, .es, etc... The
domain is the address (URL) of your website.
In the case of my website, my domain name is secretexpressions.com.
Remember that each page is linked to another one and
this is what a website is. When you have a domain or
a sub domain, all pages that are hosted in that
domain are liaised. Domains can be purchased in
different places and have different prices; some
servers offers you the
domain at the same time they offer you their "packages".
Likewise, free servers offers you a sub domain. Sub
domain is when your name is just an extension of the
server domain where you are hosting your website.
They request you to choose a name and you will see
that name after the " / " . Ex:
http://myserver.com/yourname, where,
myserver.com would be the server that owns the
domain and yourname after the " / " would be the
extension creating a sub domain.
- Choose a name for your website-
You should evaluate with time and focus on the name
you wish for your website, it must be easy to learn
and to remember, short and related to the theme of
the site; in that way you are doing it simplest to
your guests so they can learn it easily. If you
choose long names or without a relation to the
website, it will be almost impossible for your
guests to remember it and probably they could delay
years trying to finding out your website back,
unless they have added you to their favorites.
- Editors (Software)- There
are some many ways to create pages and different
languages to do so too. If you know HTML already (language
used to create pages) you ought know "Notepad"
is a good one to write it, but if you are a beginner
and do not want to learn that language, then you
must try using a program that integrates "WYIWYG" ("What you see is what you
get"). You can find it on software like:
FrontPage, Word, Works, Publisher, or its free
version that you can download on Internet, "Open
office". You should familiarize with those
software and experiment with them. As you continue
learning to use those programs, the most you will
like them.
-
Content of your
website- You should focus to know, first f all,
to which theme your web is oriented to. Nobody likes
to get into disorganized pages where speak a lot
without saying anything. You must create a menu or
an index to guide your guests to the different
sections on your website, in a clear and precise
way. Use a simple language so everyone can
understand you. If your orthography is not good,
then ask for help to a friend or a relative. If you
have nobody to ask for, then use the spelling
features you can find in the program you use to
create the pages (WORD,
FRONTPAGE, etc...). All of us commit mistakes,
but is not the same to enter in a page with some
errors than in a page where there are errors since
you get in.
-
Web Design
-If you want your pages to look stunning and
attractive to your visitors, then you must get a
design according to your likes but according to the
message you want to expose on the website too. Your
decision about the design is very important, because
it can make your visitors to come back soon or just
to leave your page once they enter.
Your design would be a good size, not to big,
because bigger size means more delay to see it, and
believe me, there are a lot of people with no
patience to wait a page to be downloaded, so they
prefer to escape to other pages where they don't
have to wait lot to see their content.

Free
Resources on Internet -You don't have to
spend a lot of money to add free resources to your
website like guestbook, counters, forums, etc. Click
on the link above to get more information.
-
Earn Money with your website -
There are some ways to earn money with your
website. It does not mean that you will become rich,
but it can help you with that extra expenses that
all of us have. The important thing is to choose the
right place. It must be a trusty source which really
pays you. Don't trust in that sites that try to
convince you that you can earn thousand of dollars
per day... be careful with that!!! Remember the
phrase: If it is too good to be true, then doubt of
it!!! Anyway, once you have selected a site that
really pay you, follow their rules. I can recommend
you Ad sense by Google.
That is the rule #1 for your success! Good luck :)
-
Share your page
and let it to be known- Once your page is
uploaded and ready to be seen, it is the moment to
present it to others. You can do it through search
machines like Google,
Altavista, Yahoo, Lycos, Infoseek, MSN, HotBot
and others, where you can add you page for free; in
that way, when somebody makes searches with keywords
used on your page, then the search machine will find
your website and will show it so they can click on
the link to get into your pages. Another way to make
your page to be known is visiting other pages and
signing their guestbook. Visiting forums, inviting
people by email (please, no spam... it will not help
you if you do that).
-
No Bandwidth stealing -A
lot of people just use to do this kind of action for
lack of knowledge. If you are going to use a
graphic that is hosted in another server and they
bring you the opportunity to use it on your pages,
even if they are freeware or linkware graphics,
please download that graphic to your computer and
then upload it to your own server where your website
is located. If you use the graphic directly from the
page you are looking the graphic that you like to,
then you are stealing their bandwidth.
Sometimes, we receive awards and gifts from other
website's owners, then in this case, you must do the
same as explain above in order you can see them on
your website without violating any rules.
